Cholecystitis is a painful sensation in the gallbladder. It is the most common pain mainly in the upper abdominal area, caused by gallstones. In many cases, gallstones block the tube that leads out of the gallbladder leading to cholecystitis, which results in a bile buildup that can cause inflammation. Other reasons include bile duct problems and tumours. One of the most common disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, which is affecting about 10% of people in western society, is cholecystitis. More than 80% of people with gallstones are asymptomatic.
The following symptoms may help in recognizing cholecystitis:
- Right upper abdominal pain.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Fever and chills.
- Cramps and bloating.
- Loose, light-coloured stools.
- Itching.
- Back or right shoulder blade ache.
Gallstones are the most common cause of cholecystitis. There is bile, which builds up in the gallbladder. If gallstones obstruct the bile ducts, it leads to inflammation and becomes the cause of cholecystitis.
The main risk factor for developing cholecystitis is having gallstones.
One can prevent themselves from the risk of cholecystitis by:
- Losing weight (extra fats).
- A healthier diet.
- Avoid foods with high level of fats and cholesterol, (as this could raise the
- chance of developing gallstones).
